Our mission is to provide a home-like place of respite for families and loved ones of adult patients who are receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center, the nation’s premier clinical research hospital.

Since opening in 2005, the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge (the Lodge) has offered a “home away from home” for adult patients who are receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center – the nation’s premier clinical research hospital – and their families and caregivers.

Conveniently located on the NIH campus within walking distance of the Clinical Center, the Lodge provides a home-like space for supportive fellowship, family time and tranquility, at no cost to patients and their families. The English manor-style residence includes 34 guest rooms, a library, a generously equipped business and telecommuting center, a fitness center, a children’s play area, a large kitchen and dining area, the Claudio and Evelyne Cohen gardens and comfortable social areas. The Lodge also provides breakfast and holiday dinners.

Patient and Family Support

The Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge puts the patient and family first, offering comfort and peace of mind during an emotionally dynamic time. Over the years, those who have stayed at the Lodge continue to express their appreciation for what it means to have a place like this available to them. Most importantly, it is a place that provides them space to be able to focus on caring for their loved one. The FNIH and NIH recognize the significant role of the patient and how their collective experiences from treatment to recovery inform patient and family needs while helping build bridges to biomedical breakthroughs.

We know that the lodge is an essential part of the clinical formula. It’s very important that we remember that the lodge is a home away from home for its residents and our top priority is to provide comfort and a sense of calmness to the patients and their families who are making vital contributions to our world’s health.

How You Can Help the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge

You can make a difference to these patients and their loved ones by helping the FNIH provide support for the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge. The FNIH has raised over $11.2 million from more than 1,200 donors to construct and maintain the Lodge. However, it needs ongoing support to fund the breakfast program, holiday meals and improvements to the building and grounds, all in service to the patients and families. Contributions of any size are vital and appreciated.
