FNIH Applauds Senate Confirmation of Monica Bertagnolli, MD as NIH Director
The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) congratulates Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, on her Senate confirmation as the next director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Bertagnolli’s appointment was confirmed by the U.S. Senate today. She is a cancer surgeon who has been leading NIH’S National Cancer Institute (NCI) and will now be only the second woman to serve as the NIH Director.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to collaborate with Dr. Bertagnolli. She is an energetic and creative scientist who has been a passionate advocate for accelerating the translation of science into treatments and cures for cancer,” said Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH, President and CEO of the FNIH. “Our nation is fortunate to have someone of Dr. Bertagnolli’s accomplishments and dedication to patients leading the world’s premier medical research agency.”
Dr. Bertagnolli is a leader of several NCI public-private-patient partnerships with FNIH, including the Partnership for Accelerating Cancer Therapies (PACT). “Dr. Bertagnolli is a strong supporter of PACT and the collaborations that connect leading biomedical scientists at NIH with their counterparts in life sciences companies, foundations, patient organizations, and regulatory agencies,” said Stacey Adam, PhD, Associate Vice President of Science Partnerships, Translational Science. “We are thrilled to work with Dr. Bertagnolli in her newly expanded role.”
