The Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge offers a cost-free home-like place of respite for families and loved ones of adult patients who are receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center, the nation’s premier clinical research hospital.
Overview
Since opening in 2005, the Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge has offered a home-like place of respite for families and loved ones of adult patients who are receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center, the nation’s premier clinical research hospital. Patients from across the nation and throughout the world visit NIH to participate as partners in medical discovery. From 2005 through October 2018, the Family Lodge has hosted approximately 139,800 guests from all 50 states and around the world.

Conveniently located on the NIH campus within walking distance of the Clinical Center, the Family Lodge provides accommodations to adult patients receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center and their families at no cost to them. A “home away from home”, it provides space during difficult and stressful times for supportive fellowship, family meetings and solitude. The English manor-style residence includes 34 guest rooms, a library, a generously-equipped business and telecommuting center, a fitness center, a children’s play area, a large kitchen and dining area, the Claudio and Evelyne Cohen gardens and comfortable social areas. The Family Lodge also provides breakfast and holiday dinners.
The FNIH has raised over $10.7 million from more than 1,000 donors to construct and support the Family Lodge. However, it needs ongoing support to fund the breakfast program, holiday meals and to maintain the building. Gifts of any size are vital and appreciated.
