NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

Overview

The Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) addresses the critical need for a pipeline of talented medical scientists capable of turning promising Research into life-changing treatments. Launched in 2012, this one-year intensive training program on the NIH campus offers up to 50 medical, dental and veterinary students opportunities to become engaged in Research early in their careers.

After a competitive admissions process, MRSP Scholars embark on a mentored, state-of-the-art Research training project that matches their personal interests and career goals. Scholars work at the frontiers of Research across many disciplines, ranging from neurological diseases to cancer to cardiovascular disease. In addition to their mentored Research project, Scholars also participate in courses and Lectures, journal club seminars and clinical teaching rounds at the nation’s Research hospital (the NIH Clinical Center), as well as leadership, entrepreneurship and drug development workshops.

The MRSP builds on a 25-year legacy, as it combines and re-envisions two highly-successful NIH training initiatives that operated in parallel until 2012— the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)-NIH Research Scholars Program and the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP).

Result & Accomplishments

Former MRSP students recognized for outstanding achievements:

  • In 2016, Harvard University’s Dr. Kyle Vining won a prize at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s emerging technology competition for creating a synthetic biomaterial that stimulates stem cells to repair teeth.
  • In 2016, Dr. Courtney Fitzhugh became a Lasker Clinical Research Scholar, a highly competitive position at the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research.
  • Read about the scholars and their abstracts for 2018-20192017-20182016-2017, 2015-2016 and 2014-2015.

Support

The NIH provides the key scientific resources and infrastructure for the program–but your help is needed to prepare the next generation of leaders in biomedical Research.

“As part of AADR’s commitment to develop the next generation of dental-scientists, AADR been pleased to support the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program since 2012. There is absolutely no better introduction to biomedical Research than a one year immersion on the NIH campus. Scholars receive invaluable mentorship,Lectures and exposure to basic, clinical and translational Research. We encourage all dental students who are interested in Research to apply for this opportunity.”
