The Science of Caregiving, Bringing Voices Together

Overview

This program completed in September 2017.

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) in collaboration with seven other NIH institutes, hosted The Science of Caregiving, Bringing Voices Together, a two-day Summit designed to discuss stakeholder perspectives on the spectrum of caregiving issues and Research.  The Summit took place at the National Institutes of Health’s Natcher Auditorium on August 7-8. 2017.

The Summit convened an audience of 800-1,000 Researchers, advocates, providers, educators, professional organization representatives to engage in moderated panels and thematic sessions. Gail Hunt, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving, and Dr. Laura Gitlin, Director of the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, lead discussions on the:

  • Importance of caregiving across the lifespan
  • Role of technology in caregiving
  • Status of NIH-supported Research
  • Current gaps in data
  • Future direction of Research

Judy Woodruff, Anchor and Managing Editor of the PBS NewsHour, was the Summit keynote speaker. 

Goals

  • Obtain stakeholder viewpoints on contemporary challenges in caregiving.
  • Describe NIH-supported advances in caregiving science.
  • Obtain perspectives on opportunities in caregiving Research.
