The Boo! Run for Life event raises donations for renal cell carcinoma – or kidney cancer – research. All proceeds contribute to the Dean R. O’Neill Renal Cell Cancer Research Fund at the FNIH, which supports a dedicated renal cell cancer research fellowship program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer, affecting more than 54,000 Americans a year — and the incidence is steadily increasing,” said Dr. Scott Campbell, Former Executive Director and CEO of the FNIH. “The Boo! Run for Life event is a great way to raise funds to help further understanding and research for this disease.”

The Dean R. O’Neill Renal Cell Cancer Research Fund, working in partnership with the FNIH and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), provides critical support for kidney cancer research by sponsoring top-notch candidates to the NIH to pursue novel and promising advanced kidney cancer treatments. The efforts of NHLBI researcher Dr. Richard Childs and his colleagues have already led to the discovery of the power of allogeneic stem cell transplantation against kidney cancer, as well as the benefits of combining immune-based therapy with drug treatments to improve the survival of patients with kidney cancer.

“Registrations for the Boo! Run for Life 10K run and Tidal Basin walk have grown every year, and we expect more than 1,000 participants again this year,” said Brian O’Neill. “Thanks in part to our runners, walkers, and sponsors in 2010, we were thrilled to announce in May 2011 the newest research fellow in partnership with the Dr. Edward T. Rancic Memorial Fund for Cancer Research.”
