Dr. Francis Collins to Step Down as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) After Twelve Years
North Bethesda, MD, October 5, 2021 – Dr. Francis S. Collins announced today that he has decided to step down from his role as Director of the National Institutes of Health by the end of this year. Dr. Collins’s twelve-year tenure will be remembered for many accomplishments, but particularly for the ways in which he brought together the efforts of governments, industry, and foundations to accelerate biomedical research and innovation. The FNIH is proud of its work with Dr. Collins in helping to meet major public health challenges by building significant public-private research partnerships such as the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® (AMP®) and Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV). We look forward to continuing to support him and the NIH through the remainder of his tenure and during the transition to a new NIH Director.
