PATIENT ENGAGEMENT
Patient Voices Help Guide the FNIH
Members of a patient engagement panel addressed Accelerating Medicines Partnership® (AMP®) Program Symposium in early 2024.
Patients continue to help chart the course of FNIH projects, contributing their essential perspectives on the value that team science and clinical research can bring to themselves and their families. Here’s a sample of what they are saying:
Pathway to Impact
- Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP) Symposium: “The clock is ticking” was the sentiment voiced at the patient engagement panel held at the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® (AMP®) Program Symposium in early 2024. Patient Ambassadors and council members conveyed their own deeply personal perspectives on the importance of patient engagement in AMP programs. The common denominator was urgency and speed, as patients are waiting for these innovations.
- Carlos Larrauri, Patient Ambassador: “The FNIH is making significant strides, actually serving as an example to others in biomedical research of end-to-end patient inclusion — from the inception of a project to planning and clinical trials and outcomes.”
- Cynthia Chauhan, Patient Ambassador: “Answers to research questions matter, but so does what’s important to patients. We are all in this together.”
- Lisa Reinish, Mother of Shelby, a Former Patient: “When you walk through these doors [of the Edmond J. Saffra Family Lodge on the NIH campus] the level of anxiety and anticipation, it’s taken down a few notches. Everything is taken care of…The garden is very Zen like. That heals.”
