Stephen J. Solarz Memorial Fund

Stephen J. SolarzEstablished in 2010, the Stephen J. Solarz Memorial Fund supports research in the laboratory of David Schrump, M.D., Chief of the Thoracic and Gastrointestinal Oncology Branch in the Center for Cancer Research of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In addition to overseeing thoracic surgery interventions for patients enrolled in NIH protocols, his research is designed to stimulate a patient’s immune system into fighting and preventing many different types of new cancer growth. Funds are used to support incredible talent by providing two-year, fully-funded international fellowship opportunities to aspiring post-doctorate scientists and researchers in the field of cancer.

In 2015, Elvin Hekimoğlu, M.D., a thoracic surgeon from Turkey became the first international fellow in Dr. Schrump’s laboratory. She is currently working on her third year as a fellow in his lab. In 2016, Dr. Shih-Hsin Hsiao from Taipei, Taiwan joined Dr. Schrump’s laboratory, thanks to the generous gift of the Fubon Cultural and Educational Foundation, which is fully supporting his two-year fellowship. Dr. Hsiao is a medical oncologist with interests in tumor heterogeneity, chemotherapy resistance and cancer stem cells. His research in Dr. Schrump’s laboratory is focused on characterizing the mechanisms by which cigarette smoke enhances growth and metastasis of lung cancer cells.

These fellowships further the science in Dr. Schrump’s laboratory and honor Mr. Solarz’s dedication to international affairs as a successful policy maker and humanitarian. By teaching advanced research techniques to highly-qualified young physicians or doctoral graduates, these individuals can return to their countries of origin and use their newly-acquired knowledge to benefit their communities.
