African Centers of Excellence in Bioinformatics
The African Centers of Excellence in Bioinformatics works to establish high-performance computing infrastructure and advanced training in biomedical data analysis to researchers at African research institutes.
The African Centers of Excellence in Bioinformatics is a strategic public-private partnership of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) that aims to strengthen bioinformatics research capacity in low- to middle-income African countries. The FNIH secured in-kind support for the program in 2015, as part of an effort to equip local Malian researchers with the infrastructure, tools, training and mentorship to conduct advanced, large-scale bioinformatics research, developing an independent community of specialists. The program currently leverages an existing African Centers of Excellence program in Mali and provides high-performance computing infrastructure and offers advanced training in biomedical data analysis to researchers. By empowering African researchers to maximize computing resources and learn advanced biomedical data analysis, the African Centers of Excellence in Bioinformatics seeks to create an independent community of bioinformatics specialists who share data, best practices and collaborate on projects.
The FNIH's work with the center is complete and the facility is fully operational.
- Address a significant gap in computing infrastructure needed to support bioinformatics research in low- to middle-income countries.
- Empower African researchers to utilize computing resources and perform advanced biomedical data analysis.
- Create an independent community of bioinformatics specialists to encourage sharing of data, best practices and collaborative projects.
