Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation for Health Policy - Support for Intramural Research Training Fellows

In 2015, the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis (JKTG) Foundation for Health and Policy established two NIH Intramural Research Training Awards (IRTAs) for deserving young scholars in the NIH Intramural Training program during the 2015-2016 academic year. In 2016, the Foundation renewed its support and provided second year funding for both their scholars in the NIH Intramural Training Program during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Sharon Milgram in the Office of Intramural Training and Education, one scholar, who had research interest in nanotechnology and cancer therapeutics, received an NIH Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award/Cancer Research Training Award (Postbac IRTA/CRTA). The other scholar, who had research interest in mathematical/molecular modeling, brain circuitry and pain, received a scholarship to NIH’s Graduate Partnership Program (GPP).

Through this IRTA, the JKTG Foundation aims to fund fellows whose basic research could help to expand the understanding of disease and could ultimately result in clinical applications.

Goals

  • Fund the basic research of deserving young scholars in the NIH Intramural Training program, which could help to expand the understanding of disease and could ultimately result in clinical applications.

Results & Accomplishments

In 2016, the two Fellows made significant progress in their research. The Postbaccalaureate Fellow further developed his skills and took steps to enter graduate school. The Graduate Fellow submitted manuscripts for publication, presented posters and defended his dissertation. Both reported that the training tremendously benefitted their career and promoted their future success.
