The National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Fogarty International Center celebrated its 50th anniversary of accomplishments and hosted a Scientific Symposium on May 1st, 2018 at the Natcher Auditorium on NIH’s campus. The program convened a series of panel discussions with NIH leaders, Fogarty grantees, and key stakeholders, to identify key gaps in global health research and strategize future research initiatives.
The International Summit in Human Genetics and Genomics is a five-year initiative (2016-2020) designed to help developing nations build and expand their knowledge base, infrastructure, systems and technologies in genetics and genomics. Each fall, researchers from abroad travel to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland for one month of in-person training at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The Summit helps them to understand the prevalence and basis of genetic diseases in their nations and to address these public health challenges. The 2019 Summit was held on August 28 - September 28, 2019.
Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), the Advancing Science, Improving Lives symposia and scholarly events will bring together scientists, healthcare professionals and members of the public to discuss the advancements in nursing science that build the foundation of clinical nursing practice.
Clayton-Dedonder Mentorship Fellows Program is designed to enhance the teaching and leadership skills of entry- to mid-level faculty at universities and research institutions in low- and middle-income countries at select training sites funded by the NIH Fogarty International Center.
The study was implemented using shared and harmonized protocols across the eight sites to gather an enormous amount of data (physical, cognitive assessments, diet, illness and enteric infection, socio-economic status, etc.) to enable identification and characterization of factors associated with negative impacts on a child’s growth, development and vaccine response early in life.
The Baby Connectome Project (BCP) is a four-year study of children from birth through five years of age, intended to provide a better understanding of how the brain develops from infancy through early childhood and the factors that contribute to healthy brain development.
This project will aim to standardize and validate measurement methods for inflammatory markers associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and/or Major Depressive Disorder to ultimately identify a unique biosignature of disease. The identified biosignature would greatly assist with medication development, patient diagnosing, and patient selection for clinical trials.
This workshop aimed at creating alignment among scientific stakeholders including the FDA, the NIH, the biopharmaceutical industry, academic researchers and patient groups regarding a proposed framework for determining the levels of evidence required to qualify biomarkers for use in drug development.
The Biomarkers Consortium’s PET Radioligand Project, completed in December 2012, developed improved, more sensitive PET radioligands with higher binding to the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor. Findings from this study suggest that the [11C]PBR38 ligand, in particular, may be useful in detecting progression from mild cognitive impairment or treatment response in Alzheimer’s Disease.
The Biomarkers Consortium Longitudinal CSF Proteomics Project addresses the need for tools for early diagnosis and measurement of disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease. This longitudinal study will measure the rate of change of five protein biomarkers within patients from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative Cohort with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), AD and healthy controls, utilizing a multiplexed mass spectrometry-based approach.
