2020 National Research Summit on Care, Services & Supports for Persons with Dementia and their Caregivers

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is hosting its 2nd National Research Summit on Care, Services, and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers on March 24-25, 2020 in Bethesda, Maryland. Through the Summit, the NIA seeks to accelerate the development, evaluation, translation, implementation, and scaling up of evidence-based and evidence-informed services for individuals with dementia, their family and caregivers.

NINDS Healthcare Disparities in Tribal Communities Summer Internship Program

The NINDS Healthcare Disparities in Tribal Communities (HDTC) Summer Internship Program (SIP) is a student research training program in brain and nervous system research. The program focuses on neurological disorders and healthcare disparities and seeks to provide research experiences and career development opportunities for Native American students, along with students from other underrepresented communities.

Etiology, Risk Factors and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development (MAL-ED)

The study was implemented using shared and harmonized protocols across the eight sites to gather an enormous amount of data (physical, cognitive assessments, diet, illness and enteric infection, socio-economic status, etc.) to enable identification and characterization of factors associated with negative impacts on a child’s growth, development and vaccine response early in life.

Biomarkers Consortium - Inflammatory Markers for Early Detection and Subtyping of Neurodegenerative and Mood Disorders

This project will aim to standardize and validate measurement methods for inflammatory markers associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and/or Major Depressive Disorder to ultimately identify a unique biosignature of disease. The identified biosignature would greatly assist with medication development, patient diagnosing, and patient selection for clinical trials.

Biomarkers Consortium - Sarcopenia as a Valid Biomarker for Identifying Individuals at Risk of Disability

Sarcopenia 2 seeks to establish evidence-based cut-points for muscle mass and strength and determine their predictive validity for clinically meaningful outcomes (such as mobility, fractures, hospitalization and death); evaluate relative strength as a discriminator for mobility limitation and incident disability; and explore the potential usefulness of sarcopenia as a clinical endpoint in randomized clinical trials.

Biomarkers Consortium - Establish Guidelines for Initial Diagnostic Criteria for “Sarcopenia with Clinically Important Weakness” and Associated Evidence for Treatment Benefit

The Sarcopenia 1 project launched in 2010 and aimed to establish the first evidence-based definition of sarcopenia (muscle weakness), which is still not recognized as a medical condition.
